Candela Cigar Controversy
For many years Candela Wrappers were "the" desirable cigar - beginning in Cuba - and then to the rest of the world.
They had appearance, taste and aroma, over all others. And then suddenly they fell out of favor and disappeared from the market.
There are several brands that have reintroduced themselves that are gaining new smokers and it appears several more entries are planned in the near future.
My question to you the Cigar Blog reader is what happened? What drove this cigar into near extinction? What about the candela cigar do you like or dislike? Finally when was the last time you smoked one?

Al,
Glad to see your blog subject on Candela wrapped cigars! I really like a Candela wrapper if the cigar is blended with that in mind. I believe that you can't just put any wrapper on any blend and get a great flavor, the tobaccos need to compliment each other. To my tastes, the Candela Cuba Aliados meets that requirement and is an under-appreciated cigar. I keep a few in my humidor most of the time.
The trend over the past few years seems to be larger ring guage and stronger cigars. In my view, neither of those fit with the flavor profile of a Candela wrapper. As you know, in a larger ring cigar, a smaller percentage of the overall tobacco in the cigar is contributed by the wrapper. Most Candela wrapper is not as oily & pungent as other wrappers and the flavor gets lost in the blend. As well, if more Ligero is used in the filler, again the probability of the Candela wrapper flavors coming through are diminished.
I wish more cigar manufacturers would consider developing premium cigars with the Candela wrapper. I think it offers a very smooth yet flavorful smoke if used correctly.

Many of tady's smokers did not experience Candela's back in the day before they began to disappear. Many of today's candelas do not seem to be properly blended to compliment the candela wrapper. As Dale mentioned, the Cuba Alliados is an exception.
